Durga Bhavani, Veeramachaneni, assumed charge as Vice-Chancellor of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidylayam, Tirupati on 30th October, 2015. She has put up more than 31 years of teaching experience including 16 years as Professor in the same University. She is the UGC - Post Doctoral Research Awardee and carried out Research on ’’Online Gaming and Children’’ (2009-11). She is the recipient of State Best Teacher Award (2004), Best Public Relations Teacher Award (1998) of Public Relations Society of India, State level Apuroopa Award (2015), Hyderabad and National Level Dewang Mehta Award (2015), Mumbai in the field of Higher Education. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Poona, Pune. At present, she is the Executive Member, Knowledge Mission, Govt. of AP and is trained at 3 Workshops.
Prof. V. Durga Bhavani
Durga Bhavani, as a senior professor by selection, as a BOS Chairperson in the department of Communication and Journalism, was instrumental in bringing to the department the UGC Special Assistance Programme, Major Research Projects and in introducing an innovative job oriented academic programme, MBA Media Management.
She has shown outstanding leadership in her profession and contributed for the growth and development of the department and the university during the past 31 years. Her multifaceted roles in the University include - Head of the Department, Chairperson Board of Studies, Dean of a School, Chief Warden of Hostels, Superintendent of Examinations, the Director, Directorate of Distance Education, Member of Academic Senate and Standing Committee, UGC Coordinator, NSS Co-ordinator, Public Relations Officer, Student's Union Advisor, Co-ordinator for IQAC, University website and ERNET. She also served as member of the Central Purchase Committee, Hostel Advisory Committee and Anti Ragging Committee. In doing so, Prof Bhavani played a significant role in accomplishing the University goals and the implementation of the various developmental activities.
Durga Bhavani is the consultant for UGC, State and Central Government Organizations and NGO's. She is the expert member of UGC Schemes like "Colleges for potential excellence", Evaluation of Research Projects etc. She was the coordinator for AP State SLET, Member of Maharashtra SET and Tamilnadu SET. While sharing her comprehensive academic skills, she designed curriculum in Mass Communication for various Universities viz Andhra, Telugu, Osmania, Nagarjuna, Dravidian, Krishna, Ambedkar, Bangalore, Mysore, Karnatak, Berhampur, Kashi Vidyapeeth and Madras University. She is the Selection Committee member of more than 15 Universities in India.
Prof. Bhavani served as Member of Programme Advisory Committee of All India Radio, Kadapa from 1995-2005. She was twice nominated as Member and Executive Member, Governing Council of Press Academy of Andhra Pradesh. Her extension activities also include organizing various youth festivals of Ministries of Tourism, Sports and Culture as a committee member.
During her career, Prof.Durga Bhavani has made major contribution in the area of Media & Technology through various research projects and publications, training programmes to sensitize youth, women and children. She has completed five major research projects and the results are published in national and international journals and also presented in the international conferences at Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, New Delhi and Hyderabad. She has authored research articles, edited books and journals, contributed newspaper articles and produced many radio programmes. Further, she was the Team Co-ordinator of two Major research projects. Her other pursuit activities carried exclusively for University include various University Publications, Newsletters and Brochures. She is the Editor for Indian Journal of Media Studies, a half yearly publication of the University and was the Associate editor for ’Thenateaga’, a Telugu counterpart of English Journal 'Honey Bee’.
She has accomplished her role in mobilizing and motivating the women, especially from rural backdrop towards Journalism and Media by conducting various training programmes. Also, Prof. Bhavani conducted training programmes on media and technological advancements for working journalists and women journalists. She has delivered more than 100 expert lectures in various National and Internationals conferences, and other bodies like Journalist Unions, Press Academy, PRSI, TTD, Academic Staff Colleges, Degree Colleges; Cultural, Literary, Fine Arts, Film and Women associations; Clubs like Lions, Rotary, JAYCEE; NGOs and Village Panchayats.
